Working out is probably on everyone’s to-do list this year. With so many fitness accounts on social media, it’s no wonder women are flocking to the gym to sculpt the perfect arms, abs or legs. For many of us Muslim women, that also includes building a wardrobe of “appropriate” workout clothes. As a hijabi, I have really struggled in a time of mesh yoga pants and crop tops.

And while there are definitely hijab-friendly pieces out there, the problem is knowing where to look so that you aren’t spending hours on the computer scrolling through pages of options just to find maybeee 1 or 2 pieces that you aren’t sure will fit well. Or store hopping from retailer to retailer and rummaging through racks on racks only to be disappointed.

Some Muslim brands are now also offering stylish and modest activewear ranging from sporty hijabs to tracksuits and more, which gives us conservative Muslim women more options and, therefore, more motivation to actually sign up for that gym membership we’ve been holding off on.

Here are some places that almost always guarantee success in finding Muslim-friendly workout gear, whether you wear the hijab or not. Depending on your budget and just how committed you are to getting into the habit of working out, these retailers offer various trendy options for activewear that look cute while still being modest.

1. Veil Garments

Veilgarments is a new modest activewear brand that’s revolutionizing both workout gear and the hijab for Muslim women. It created the first high-tech hijab that adjusts to climate change and actually makes you feel cooler. The CoolDry Shawl is waterproof, sweat-wicking, cooling, and protects against UV Rays. Furthermore, it’s made from stitch-free, low-wrinkle, ultra comfortable and durable fabric that is easy to wear and care for. As a startup company, they don’t have many options for workout apparel just yet, but the ones they do have are everything us Muslim gym goers could ask for. Lightweight, fitted yet loose in all the right places, long, breatheable and comfortable awesomeness.

Check them out below.

Cool Dry Shawl, $21
Spark Half-Zip Top, $49
Halo Running Hoodie, $49
Glider Drawstring Jogger, $39

2. Sukoon Active

Sukoon is an innovative, eco-friendly modest activewear brand. All of their products are made from natural, sustainable materials that still provide the high-quality comfort and performance necessary for durable athletic wear. They minimize their environmental carbon footprint by using eco-friendly materials rather than the polluting chemical additives most other fast fashion retailers use. Furthermore, their pieces are made in a high-quality factory that provides excellent wages and working conditions to its employees. So, you wouldn’t only be investing in a great company, but in the environment as well.

This brand also offers lightweight hijabs with cooling technology for more breathability and comfort. What is unique about this hijab is its design which offers snap clip closures and loop customization that allows users to adjust the fitting to their liking. It also has a hidden pocket that is convenient to hold your phone, AirPod case, or other small items. The workoutwear they offer is also stylish, lightweight, comfortable, and easy to wear over leggings. They are also flattering for all body shapes and sizes.

HAWA Headwrap, $44
HAWA Drawstring Tee, $72
HAWA Step Tee, $72

3. ASIYA

ASIYA Sport is an activewear brand made by and for Muslim women. They also designed a collection of sports hijabs where they offer three different styles of athletic hijabs in a range of colors, ASIYA Sport, ASIYA Lite, and ASIYA FIT. They are the same price as the Nike Pro Hijabs. They are all made of ultra-lightweight and soft fabric with sweat-wicking technology that keeps you cool and comfortable during your workout. ASIYA currently has a Limited Edition Fit Pearl hijab, which has the same cooling technology, but comes in a patterned design and is longer than the other hijabs. ASIYA Swim is their new hijab line that are made of ultra-chlorine resistant, UVA & UVB protected swim fabric.

Check out the collection below.

ASIYA Sport, $35
ASIYA Lite, $35
ASIYA FIT, $35
ASIYA Swim, $35

4. Modefywear

Modefywear is a modest fashion brand that has created a game changer for Muslim female athletes: the high-tech performance hijab. What sets this hijab apart from the rest is that it is technology-friendly, meaning it has ear holes that provide more accessibility and comfort for earbuds, bluetooth pieces, hearing aids, sunglasses, and more. For added coverage, it comes with an optional earband that covers the earholes. There is even a pocket in the hijab just below the neck that allows you to store your phone or other small items, so that you don’t have to have your headphones hanging down to your waist as you work out.

5. Nike

Nike factory outlets tend to be a favorite of mine when shopping for modest workout clothes. No matter the season, Nike keeps their factory outlets stocked with long sleeved t-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies. Nike also took home the jackpot when they released the Nike Pro Hijab, becoming the first major brand to create a hijab for Muslim female athletes. By creating this piece, Nike was able to capture a whole market of hijabis that were sick of buying two piece hijabs, or dealing with the ever-moving hijab at the gym. The Nike Pro Hijab is sold at Macy’s, Nordstrom’s, Amazon, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and other online boutiques.

They also came out with the Nike Pro Hijab 2.0, which is made from sweat-wicking mesh that provides more breathability. The new interior strap helps prevent slippage even more than the first version. With this hijab on, you won’t have to worry about half of your hair being exposed mid-squat with a heavy dumbbell lift on your shoulders. Phew.

Here a few more of my favorite pieces from their online shop.

Nike Pro Hijab, $35
Women’s Tunic Hoodie, $60
Fleece Hoodie, $65
Women’s Long-Sleeve Training Top, $40

6. Adidas

Adidas also has great pieces for the gym. If you can find an Adidas factory outlet near you, then you are in luck. They typically carry modest pieces year-round and with great discounts. They, too, started a hijab line, but it is only available for sale on their United Arab Emirates and South African websites. You’ll be surprised what unique yet super chic and stylish pieces you can find that check off all of the right boxes for hijab-friendly gear, like this Women’s Originals Hoodie.

If you’re a fan of adidas, here are some more pieces that will add guaranteed comfort, style and coverage to your workouts.

Women’s Original Hoodie, $130
Must Haves Badge of Sport Logo Hoodie, $30
Women’s Originals Sweatshirt, $30
Tiro 19 Training Pants, $45

7. PUMA

If Puma is more your vibe, they too have outlets that offer modest pieces year-round. You can find loose-fitted, long tops and baggy bottoms at this retailer. Elongated sweaters and tops are lifesavers because when they are long and baggy enough, you can get away with wearing those favorite pair of leggings you keep stashed away in your drawer underneath.

Puma has a variety of long sweaters and loose athletic pants in different styles, colors, and fits. Here are a few of my favorites..

Essentials+ Women’s Elongated Hoodie, $50
Modern Sports Women’s Sweatpants, $45
Classics T7 Women’s Full Zip Hoodie, $29.99
Classics T7 Women’s Track Pants, $39.99

8. Under Armour

Under Armour is another one of my favorite places to shop for activewear. Unlike many other brands whose selection of athletic bottoms are limited to either skin tight leggings or cotton joggers that aren’t meant for working out in, Under Armour really comes through in offering a variety of options. You can find loose bottoms that are lightweight, breathable with sweat-wicking and quick drying fabric, and comfortable to workout in.

I’ve handpicked a few of my top picks for you below.

UA Double Threat Armour Fleece, $54.99
UA Woven Branded, $50
UA Rival Terry Joggers, $50
UA Rival Knit, $50

9. Victoria’s Secret– Pink

PINK is always a winner with their famed yoga pants and baggy long sleeve t-shirts and sweaters. A few of their crewnecks, pullovers, and long sleeve tops are lightweight and have an oversized fit and a super soft feel, which makes them cute and cozy options for both the gym and everyday wear.

The Most Loved Yoga Pant, $30
Long Sleeve Campus Tee, $34.95
Mock Neck Long Sleeve Tee, $29.95

10. Fabletics

I’ve also come across some great finds on Fabletics. They have tons of oversized sweaters and high neck tops that are super cute and versatile. While they’re definitely up there in the price, and may not work for everyone’s budgets, they do have a VIP membership option where you can save 50% everything. It’s a subscription service where each month you can shop from personalized picks to create an outfit for at least $49.95, and you even have the option to skip a month if you don’t want to purchase anything. If you are already breaking the bank buying expensive workout gear, this could be an effortless and more affordable way to shop for high-quality and super fashionable athleticwear.

Here are some of my favorites.

Zaylee Funnel Neck Tunic, $79.95 VIP $$34.97
Leah Oversized Hoodie, $74.95 VIP $32.47
Lotta Cocoon Hoodie II, $79.95 VIP $32.47
Daria Terry Jogger, $64.95 VIP 2 for $24

Affordable Modest Options for Workout Gear

Quality and durability is so important when it comes to activewear, so it can definitely be pricey, especially when shopping from top brands. But, don’t let that discourage you. There are more affordable options, and sometimes you can find brands like Nikes, Adidas, Puma, Pink etc. elsewhere for cheaper.

1. Modanisa

Modanisa is a Turkish fashion platform where you can find all things modest. From jumpsuits, dresses, tops, to yes, activewear. You won’t have to worry about high slits in dresses, crotch-hugging pants, or skin tight sweatsuits while shopping with them. Most tracksuit sets you find in other retailers have too short of a top and too tight of bottoms to be able to wear to the gym. And gone are the days when layering with a long camisole was actually considered cute. But Modanisa is bringing you some super stylish athleisure to add to your wardrobe.

Kick it to the gym in style and a peaceful conscience with these modest sportsets.

Runever Tracksuit Set, $26.59
Marwella Tracksuit Set, $17.49
Tommy Life Tracksuit Set, $24.49
Tommy Life Crew neck Tracksuit Set, $34.99

2. T.J.Maxx

One store that typically doesn’t fail me when it comes to finding affordable modest gymwear is T.J.Maxx. No matter the season, they always have a few pieces that are fitting for a modest gym goer. Long pants are a constant at T.J.Maxx, which comes in handy when other retailers are selling only shorts. Every once in a while, this off-price retailer will have a great deal on an otherwise expensive piece. Nike, Adidas, Puma, Under Armour, and other brands can be found at this department store chain at more affordable prices. Along with T.J.Maxx, Marshalls, Burlington Coat Factory, and Ross also provide the same options.

Threadborne Seamless Reversible Long Sleeve Top, $16.99
RBX Peached Scoop Neck Top, $12.99
RBX Marled French Terry Tunic, $14.99
FILA Court Allure Pants, $16.99

3. Target

Who doesn’t love Target? I get lost in Target for hours, and always leave with much more than I went in looking for. But, I know I am not alone from all of the Target memes floating around the internet. Like T.J.Maxx, Target is a department store that curates products from tons of different brands. However, you won’t find brand merchandise such as Nike, Adidas, Puma, etc. for cheaper like you would at T.J.Maxx. Most of the brands they do carry are affordable and great quality, and you can always find awesome deals on items that would be sold for more at other retailers. Expect more, pay less, and it’s true.

I found some cute modest gymwear at great prices. See them below.

Women’s Authentics Long Sleeve French Terry Pullover – C9 Champion, $24.99
Women’s French Terry Tunic Pullover – C9 Champion, $24.99
Women’s Semi Fit Mid-Rise Fleece Joggers 29″ – C9 Champion, $24.99
Women’s Mid-Rise Cozy Jogger Pants – JoyLab, $28.04

3. H&M

H&M is one of my favorite go-tos for modestwear in general. Shopping there is usually effortless, and I tend to find one too many trendy hijab-friendly pieces that I absolutely love. It’s no wonder that their sportswear collection also offers modest options. At H&M, I’ve found some very cute long tops that are great for a good workout or even a sporty look when going out. They even have a maternity collection for all the pregnant ladies out there trying to stay fit.

Long-sleeved Sports Top, $24.99
Sports Pants, $34.99
Sports Pants, $34.99
H&M+ Flared Sports Tights, $24.99

4. Forever 21

It’s no surprise that Forever 21 also carries a line of workout clothes. Because they don’t have a huge selection of activewear, and their collection isn’t always available at every location, it may be a little harder to find modest pieces. But when you do, they are Instaworthy styles for that perfect gym selfie, and are cheap! Score!

Check out these super cute finds below.

Active Hooded Drawstring Cardigan, $22.90
Active Velvet Joggers, $15
Active Marled Vented Sweater, $22.90

No matter your budget, there are surefire places to find cute and modest workout wear. These brands have definitely made it easier for me to get ready for the gym when I would normally just give up and choose to workout at home, if I couldn’t find anything suitable to wear. Especially if you’re someone who wants to hit the gym on the daily, or get a workout in at least a few times a week, having more options to add to your gym collection is a must. It saves you from having to run your washer for only a few pieces of sweaty laundry each day.

Another tip when shopping for workout gear is that, depending on the fit and style, you can also get away with going up a size or two to get that extra coverage and oversized look without it looking weird. So, that’s an option if you do find a piece you love but it just isn’t long or modest enough in your size. And when in doubt, tie a sweatshirt around your waist!
